Getting Started with a Web Site

First, see the list of advantages to having your own website

It is estimated that over 350 million people in the United States used the internet on a daily basis. To be considered an established company consumers expect a web presence. Many of our customers have questions about what they have to do in order to have their own website

In order to have a website, you need three things; a domain name, a web host and the actual web pages. In the following paragraphs we will explain each step and make suggestions on how you can best accomplish these things.

Domain Name

A domain name is a humanly-memorable name for your website address, for example, ours is gmprint1.com. These names have to be registered with an internet authority and are world exclusive. There can only be one of each name including it's extension so there can be gmprint1.com, gmprint1.biz, gmprint1.net, etc. Once that name is registered, along with it's extension, no one else can use it.

Web hosting companies try to sell the customer on registering the name through them or even, at times, offer the first year for free. This all sounds good but can cause you a problem in the long run. When you register a name through a web host then they own the name, not you. If you have a problem with your host and many people do and end up changing, then it becomes very difficult to renew your name or move it to a new hosting company. It can be done, its just takes more time and lots of aggravation.

We can suggest who we think you should register your name with. As of January 2009, this company managed more than 6.6 million domain names. We have used them ourselves for many years and have never had an issues with them. You may register your domain for any number of years depending on how long you think you will be having your website. As a rule, the longer you register it for, the better deal you get. As of June 2012 the cost to register one domain for a year is $34.99 whereas if you register the name for 10 years then it would cost $17.99 per year. You have to remember to renew your name at the end of each registration period. The company we suggest will send you reminders when your name is up for renewal. When you register a name the first time and you set up an account just make sure to keep your user name and password in a safe place because we will need to access the account after you get your web host.

Web Hosting

This is a type of internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to make their web pages accessible on the world wide web. Web hosts provide space on a web server that is owned or leased by clients. Personal web site hosting is typically free, advertisement-sponsored, or inexpensive. Business web site hosting often has a higher expense.

Basic hosting is generally sufficient for personal or small business site. A complex site would need a more comprehensive package that provides database support and application development platforms. These plans allow customers to write or install scripts for applications like forums, contact management and online shopping carts, among others. The host may also provide an interface for managing the server and installing scripts, as well as other modules and service applications like e-mail.

We often suggest a basic hosting plan. This is perfect for web projects, personal websites, blogs and small to medium-sized business websites that demand fast, reliable, and secure Web site hosting services. Even thought the basic hosting plans that you may see offered by some hosts, include one domain name registration, we still suggest you do this separately. The cost as of June 2012 is $8.95 per month if you sign a contract and prepay for a year. The cost drops to $4.95 per month if you sign up and prepay for 5 years.

Ask us what to do before you sign up and we can suggest which plan we think would work best and be most cost effective for you.

Basic Web Page Deign

We can start out designing you a basic, static (page with no animation or video), web page for $160.00. The site can be as complex and extensive as you want it to be depending on your budget. Please note that there will be additional charges for more complex sites. Let us know your needs and we can customize your quote.

Package One includes one static (no animation or video) page, with up to three photos and whatever text you want to add for $160.00

Package Two includes three static (no animation or video) page, with up to three photos and whatever text you want to add for $300.00

Package Three includes 5 static pages with up to three photos each and whatever text you want for $450.00

Package Four includes 10 static pages with up to three photos each and whatever text you want for $850.00.

Changes can be made to your site any time for a nominal charge. Most times small copy changes can be done for as little as $25.00. Please keep in mind that changes on web pages are more difficult than on pages designed for print. Any changes on a web page can cause coding problems that alter the function of the page or how it displays in a browser. If this happens the code has to be reviewed and changed to restore the proper function of the page.

If you have something custom in mind then we can talk about what you want and provide you with a quote.

We offer advanced features such as flash, e-commerce shopping cards, video, search engine optimization and almost anything you can think of.
